After graduating from Spookybrook Witch Academy, Delphine takes a job with the Demon Hunters. Her first mission: to track down the demons Gabriel had set free and send them back to Hell.
“Are you kidding me right now?” I sighed as I put my sword back in its sheath, the demon’s body dropping to the floor in front of me. Or should I say, previous body? It wasn’t gone.
The human he had been riding for the past few weeks, however, was long gone.
Getting rid of a demon was more involved than just ejecting them from their vessel. They weren’t banished back to hell until the black smoke swirled and dissipated in front of me. He had merely abandoned his shell. Another person may have been fooled by this trickery, but not me. I hunt demons for a living. I’ve seen it all… and then some.
“I’m not gonna fall for those tricks,” I called out, waving my left hand out in front of me, my right hand reaching into my pocket for a small satchel.
It was one thing that pulled a demon out of hiding when it had lost its physical form.
It also hurt like hell.
I’d make him show himself, one way or another.
Reaching into the leather sack, I took a fine bit of the dust into my hand, waited for just the right moment, and then…
I felt the demon’s presence close to me, threw the dust perfectly in the right direction, and his dark form began to appear in front of me.
“Well, looky-looky,” I laughed as his smoky shape came into my view.
Then, I looked into his red eyes as I plunged my sword into his chest and sent him back to where he belonged: in Hell.
His screams filled the room, echoing off the walls as his smoky figure dissipated in front of me. I wiped the angel dust from my hand, slid my sword back into its sheath, and straightened my leather jacket.
Just another day as a Demon Hunter. And one more of Gabriel’s demons to check off my list. He had released 100 demons in this spell last year when he attacked the school. A few had been destroyed back then when all the chaos was happening. And from there, a few more had been sent back to Hell by other Demon Hunters.
When they brought me on board, there were about seventy of Gabriel’s demons still roaming the earth, and twenty of those were assigned to me. This guy right here had the honor of being number six to check off my list.
Technically, demons can’t die because they are not alive. But it’s the easiest way to explain what it is we do to them. For all intents and purposes, we are killing their earthly form. There are also lots of ways to injure and hinder them, but that didn’t really apply to Gabriel’s nasties. All I wanted to do was send these bastards back to where they belonged.
I had always been well versed in the Dark Arts. It was my favorite subject at Spookybrook Witch Academy, and I excelled above and beyond my peers. In fact, I did so well that when Gabriel and the demons attacked the school, I was there to help my teachers figure it all out.
Of course, there were students who had their doubts about me, and probably some teachers who did as well. Everyone had always thought I was weird, different, and being that I was obsessed with the Dark Arts, possibly also dangerous.
Ahh witches… just like humans, they often fear what they do not understand.
Thankfully, I had the chance to prove my character when Gabriel attacked our school. An unsuspected and undertrained High Witch and a new-to-magic Time Witch may have been the target, but those demons had never met the likes of me, Delphine Adisa.
They couldn’t have defeated him without me.
My good friend, Julie, and her new roommate Vivian got deeper into the demon world than they ever intended, and thankfully, I was there to help save them – more than once!
It’s no surprise that after graduation, I would apply for a position with the Demon Hunters. They had practically recruited me, honestly. After my work at the school, they were there poking around, asking questions, and had invited me to a luncheon to learn more about what they do.
I already knew everything there was to know about the Demon Hunters, a secret organization for the magical world, tasked with maintaining the magical balance on earth and keeping evil things like demons in check. Ever since I was a little girl, I had been obsessed with demons, and the Dark Arts, and the Demon Hunters. I’d wanted to be one for as long as I could remember, and that meant knowing all that you could about demons.
Demons walked the earth. They probably had done so long before humans, but we hardly noticed them. Now and again, however, we had some nasty ones like Gabriel’s minions who would get lose and wreak havoc.
It was one of those such demons who had killed my mother when I was just five years old. I watched as her lifeless body fell to the floor, the demon looked at me, his eyes red like fire, and then he poofed away. In the blink of an eye, he was a puff of smoke, and then he was gone.
Watching my mother die in my arms was the worst thing that had ever happened to me. And I had vowed to get revenge. It would be my personal mission to see to it that demons didn’t hurt anyone else ever again. So, when they attacked our school, you can be damn sure I was ready!
Now, I was on a mission. A mission to track down all the demons Gabriel had unleashed upon the world and send them straight back to Hell where they belonged.
But hunting demons across the globe was no easy task! They had so many skills and tools at their disposal and they could hide, fly under our radars and go undetected, shapeshift, and manipulate time and matter, just to name a few.
The demons Gabriel had released were not your standard run-of-the-mill, low-level demons. These were some real baddies. Nasty creatures birthed in the bowels of Hell and cursed to stay there for all eternity. Now they were free and not willing to go back without a fight.
However, I was six months in, and I had learned a few tricks.
- Never turn your back on a demon.
- Always carry angel dust.
- Master the Demon Sword.
So far, these rules had led me well. My blade was my best friend. We went everywhere together. I slept with it. No demon would ever, ever catch me off guard without my Demon Sword.
This special weapon had been enchanted by the strongest witches in our Coven. It offered me protection from harm, it magnified all of my magic, and… it killed demons instantly on contact when used correctly.
